Takata Airbag Recall Jumps to 34 Million

Most people are familiar with the major automakers, but few consumers know the names of the various manufacturers that supply the pieces and parts that go into our vehicles. That has changed in recent months, as Japanese airbag maker Takata has been forced to recall millions of airbags due to serious defects that have led to numerous injuries and deaths.

According to the New York Times, the recall has reached 34 million, which means that roughly one in seven American vehicles contains a defective airbag. The recalled airbags can explode on impact, sending deadly shrapnel throughout a vehicle’s interior. So far, more than 100 injuries and six deaths have been linked to Takata airbags.

Reports have also surfaced that Takata knew about the dangerous airbags for more than a decade and took no action. The company has now acknowledged that it failed to inform consumers about the problem.

Is Your Vehicle on the Recall List?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has created a website devoted to the Takata airbag recall. Consumers can enter their car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) on the site to determine if their vehicle is affected.

So far, the Takata airbag recall encompasses numerous models of Ford, General Motors, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Saab, Nissan, Dodge, Honda, Pontiac, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, Acura, and Mazda vehicles.

If you own a vehicle on the list, the NHTSA advises you to contact your vehicle’s manufacturer for guidance regarding removing the defective airbag as soon as possible. It’s also likely that the list of affected vehicles will continue to grow, so it’s important to stay alert for any further additions to the recall list.
