The Long-Term Effects of Whiplash

Apr 8, 2015 | Firm News

Whiplash is an injury frequently caused by rear-impact motor vehicle accidents. When a motorist is hit from behind, the impact can cause the head to snap backward and forward violently, causing injury. Many people think of whiplash as something you can recover from within a matter of days or weeks. It’s common for people to assume that some rest, a couple of painkillers, and perhaps a few days off work is all it takes for a whiplash injury to heal. Although some whiplash sufferers recover relatively quickly, others suffer long-term pain and disability.

Symptoms of Whiplash

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, whiplash can encompass injury to the intervertebral joints, ligaments, discs, nerve roots, and cervical muscles. A rear-impact crash forces the body forward while throwing the head and neck backward then forward. This hyperflexion can result in neck pain, stiffness, headache, dizziness, and myofascial injuries. Some sufferers also report memory loss, fatigue, depression, and insomnia.

Unfortunately, whiplash often goes unreported. In many cases, car accident victims are unaware of the potential severity of this type of injury. Failure to obtain treatment – or a delay in treatment – can lead to long-term and even permanent injuries. Long-term injuries can include:

  • Tingling in the neck and limbs
  • Arm weakness and pain
  • Fatigue
  • Migraine/headache
  • Jaw pain and dysfunction
  • Vision problems
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

1 Million Whiplash Injuries Each Year

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), whiplash injuries are among the most common car accident injuries, with nearly 1 million people injured annually. One study found that more than one-quarter of all motorists involved in a rear-struck vehicle suffered some type of neck injury.

Because whiplash injuries are usually soft tissue injuries, they can be difficult to document and prove. Unlike a broken bone, for example, a torn muscle or ligament can be more difficult for a physician to diagnose. This is why it’s critically important to work with the experienced personal injury attorneys at Anesi, Ozmon, Rodin, Novak & Kohen, Ltd. “I would just like to say to everyone at the firm, this is about Jeff Alter, I know that you all there have large and much more profitable cases than mine, the people that Jeff and his secretary had to deal with are simply scandals and that is being polite, but Jeff and his wonderful secretary fought for me and my family, I was off work over this for over a year. Medical bills . . . just a lot of uncertainty, fear and just being taken great advantage of, my settlement is only a few dollars, less than $4,000, this is in no way due to lack of working hard and vigorously for me [sic].”
