Court Updates During COVID-19

Oct 2, 2020 | Firm News

By Hayley K. Graham

The last six months has been an unprecedented time in history for everyone across all industries during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Still, Anesi Ozmon has remained committed to providing the gold standard of service to our clients.

Our attorneys have learned to navigate virtual court appearances and depositions. Our dedicated support staff has adapted to changes in court filing procedures. Our entire team has implemented new strategies for working remotely.

In-person court appearances largely remain on hold for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission (IWCC) and the circuit courts have adapted to nearly exclusive video court appearances to keep cases moving forward.

Trials in Cook County courts have been deferred until 2021. However, depositions, mediations and pre-trial conferences continue.

Trials at the IWCC only commence following a mandatory pre-trial conference with the judge. If the judge agrees to set the case for trial after the pre-trial conference, it proceeds under strict rules and time limits.

Changes in procedures have also been followed by a shift in arbitrators at the IWCC. Governor J.B. Pritzker appointed several new arbitrators, which took effect in September, replacing appointments by former Governor Bruce Rauner. Changes in circuit court judges are on the horizon in November, as many are up for retention in the upcoming elections.

Anesi Ozmon will continue to adapt to the changing landscape of the legal practice during this extraordinary time. We are unwavering in our commitment to tenaciously advocate for the rights of our clients and their families.
